KARACHI: Thieves broke open the locks of a jewellery shop in the main Saddar Bazaar and made off with gold, cash and other valuables, police said on Wednesday.

South DIG Syed Asad Raza said unidentified suspects entered the shop on Zaibunissa Street and stole a locker containing gold and silver ornaments (value yet to be determined), Saudi riyals, Rs2 million in cash, and a licensed 9mm pistol.

Officials visited and examined the crime scene, recorded witness statements and collected relevant CCTV footage. A route map of the suspects is being prepared, while call data records of suspected mobile numbers are also being obtained for further analysis.

Meanwhile, a suspect identified as Abdul Rehman, who is a watchman, has been taken into custody after the shop owner expressed “strong suspicion” about his possible involvement. The South DIG said the watchman’s involvement “appears apparent at this stage” and he is being thoroughly interrogated.

Preedy police have registered an FIR under Sections 380 (theft), 457 (trespass) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the shop owner, Talha Mohammed Ali Habib.

According to the FIR, the complainant stated that he closed his shop at around 9:15pm on April 28. At approximately 5:15am on April 29, the watchman informed him that the shop’s shutter was open and a burglary had occurred. The complainant, along with his brother, reached the scene, where police were already present.

Upon inspection, they found that gold ornaments, gold and silver biscuits, precious stones, Rs2 million in cash, Saudi riyals, and a 9mm pistol were missing.
