LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday again chided traffic police for randomly stopping motorcyclists while ignoring smoke-emitting vehicles freely plying on roads.

During the hearing of a set of petitions regarding smog prevention, Justice Shahid Karim remarked that the conduct of traffic wardens was strange.

He observed that traffic wardens often stop multiple motorcyclists, even if it disturbs traffic flow on the road.

“Why helmet wearing motorcyclists are stopped without any violation,” the judge questioned with surprise.

He pointed out that under the Motor Vehicle Ordinance, reasons must be provided for stopping a motorist.

The judge said the traffic police personnel themselves violate the law on a daily basis.

Justice Karim further noted that vehicular emissions are a major source of air pollution. He regretted the lack of action against smoke-emitting vehicles.

Separately, the judge directed the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) to take steps for the restoration of dilapidated parks and sought details of parks selected for rehabilitation at the next hearing.

The judge also instructed the authorities to begin inspections of brick kilns ahead of the smog season and directed the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) to ensure recovery of dues for the usage of underground water.
