GUJRANWALA, June 29: Three prisoners were injured, one of them seriously, when jail officials tortured the inmates of barrack No 9 and registered a case against them for attempting suicide here on Thursday.

It is learnt that the prisoners were protesting against officials for humiliating and torturing them over minor issues for the last few days and raising slogans. The jail officials allegedly tortured them ruthlessly as a result of which Suleman, Mushtaq and Javed Akmal suffered serious injuries. They were reportedly shifted to jail hospital from the barrack where the condition of latter was stated serious.

The jail officials registered a case against them in self-defence.

When contacted, jail superintendent said they tried to commit suicide.

Park: As many as eight kanals of the land reserved for a recreational park has been occupied by land-grabbers, while fake uplift bills were sent to the district administration.

Reports said former district council chairman Ahsan Iqbal Jamil had approved construction of a recreational park at Maraliwala Town on Sheikhupura Road on 24-kanal piece of land on the recommendation of union council chairman Ashref.

A contractor was asked to construct park’s boundary wall after filling the land with earth. In the meantime, some land-grabbers constructed houses, outhouses and cattle pens on eight kanals of the land. The contractor, meanwhile, sent fake development bills of Rs4.5 million to the district administration without constructing boundary wall and leveling the park land.

The district administration officials concerned, when came to know about the fraud, held the bills and started an inquiry against the contractor.
