Young man drowns in uncovered drain in Karachi

KARACHI: A young man drowned after falling into an open drain in the old city area on Saturday, rescue services officials said.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaan-ul-Haseeb Khan told Dawn that the 32-year-old victim, Yaseen Khuda Bux, was passing through the Lea Market area when he fell into the uncovered nullah.

He became trapped in thick sludge and died. The body was retrieved by rescuers after strenuous efforts lasting nearly two hours, Mr Khan said.

Later, the corpse was shifted to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities.

Man killed in celebratory firing at wedding

A young man was killed during celebratory firing in a marriage ceremony in Orangi Town early Saturday morning, police said.

The Orangi Town police said 23-year-old Moazam Ali was fatally struck by a bullet during aerial firing at a wedding function in Sector 9-E, near Arafat Masjid.

In Sector 13, a 39-year-old woman, Najma Naveed, sustained bullet wounds after being hit by a stray bullet near Khizra Masjid.
