Al Jazeera has spoken with Chadi Nayef Sayah, the mayor of the southern Lebanese village of Alma al-Shaab, which has faced displacement threats from Israel.
He says families from the predominantly Christian village have been forced to leave in fear for their lives due to Israel’s invasion of southern Lebanon and are now mostly in Beirut, living off the generosity of others.
“There is emotional exhaustion, financial pressure and the constant feeling of instability,” Sayah tells Al Jazeera. “What’s happening is the destruction of an entire community, a way of life and a deep connection to our land.”
“Despite all this, people are trying to hold on, support each other and maintain some dignity in very hard circumstances,” he adds. “We don’t know what’s next.”
