LAHORE, June 25: A high-level provincial committee is likely to be constituted to assess ability of the BS-16 inspectors legal of the police department to serve against the higher posts of public prosecutors in the new prosecution department.

The Punjab government had decided to absorb district and deputy district attorneys against the BS-17 to BS-19 posts of district, deputy and assistant public prosecutors in the recently-created independent public prosecution service.

The inspectors legal were, however, not given the offer on the grounds that they were in BS-16 and could not automatically be inducted against the new higher posts.

Subsequently, some of the 323 inspectors legal challenged the decision in a court, making the provincial government commit that they would be given an opportunity to serve in the new department.

Official sources informed Dawn on Sunday that the government was now considering to form a committee probably under the additional chief secretary to assess the ability of the inspectors legal to serve in the new department. They made it clear that there would be no automatic absorption of all.

The ability would be checked either by the committee or the public service commission, the officials said.

All inspectors legal are law graduates and like all attorneys, 70 of them were recruited by the Punjab Public Service Commission. All of them appear before courts like the attorneys.

Of the 67 district and 152 deputy district attorney’s, 58 and 140 have opted for the new service which has 950 posts of district, deputy district and assistant district public prosecutors.

After the absorption of the attorneys, the remaining vacancies will be filled through fresh recruitments which have been delayed owing to litigation by the inspectors legal.
