LONDON: Two British daily papers expressed grave views on Friday [March 9] on the South African Nationalists Bill for removing coloured voters from the common register. … The Daily Telegraph says that the prosperity of South Africa has been placed in jeopardy by embittering the coloured people, and has made it fertile soil for the seeds sown by Communist agitators.

The Manchester Guardian is concerned about the fate of all the Union’s pro-Commonwealth residents, should Malan decide to leave the Commonwealth. “It is all very well for impatient groups in Great Britain to ask why Dr Malan and his South Africa should not be given notice to quit the Commonwealth with the spirit of which they agree so little”, says the Guardian, which reports that Malan appears to be already contemplating a Republic outside the Commonwealth.

… The Guardian welcomes the fact that ... the main differences of opinion between the Union and Great Britain have been brought into the open. On the issue of the High Commission territories Dr Malan has made it far more difficult for Great Britain to give the kind of “soothing and evasive answers” which have so often been given in the past.
