ISLAMABAD, June 18: Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party MNA Makhdoom Amin Fahim has rejected the demand for a new constitution. In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr Fahim said that of late it had become a fashion for some people to demand a new social contract to replace the 1973 Constitution.

“Agreement of all the federating units on federal and parliamentary character of the constitution was a great political achievement and if it is scrapped it would be almost impossible to make another consensus constitution,” Mr Fahim said.

The PPP stalwart said that all political parties should demand scrapping of the amendments made in the Constitution through executive fiats.

He said that the Charter of Democracy also demanded restoration of the 1973 Constitution and repeal of the 17th amendment.

He said that constitution was the basic document to keep people together and any tinkering with it could be disastrous for the country.—Online
