SAHIWAL, June 17: A PML-N worker is reported killed and 15 others injured in a stampede at the party workers’ convention late Friday night.

Reports said the PML-N convention concluded at 11pm after which the participants were invited to have a dinner the party leadership had arranged for them in a bungalow just opposite the venue for the event.

As the bungalow’s gate had been opened, the participants scampered to the place and started tumbling over one another while passing the gate. In a stampede-like situation, at least 15 people were injured. Among them Sohail Ahmad, 40, Sultan, Ejaz, 24, Shahid, 21, Aslam, 25, and Kashif were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital where Sohail succumbed to injuries. The condition of others was stated to be serious.

Earlier, scores of PML-N activists, including women, were baton-charged by the police for being disorderly. PML-N Punjab President Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa and other office-bearers spoke on the occasion.

INJURED: The Sahiwal district police officer, his gunman and driver suffered grievous injuries in a road accident on Saturday morning.

Reports said DPO Javed Husain Shah, his gunman Ghulam Mustafa and driver Shafqat were going to Lahore by an official vehicle (SLM-6811). On the Lahore-Multan Road near Yousafwala, the vehicle collided with a trawler (PRN-9639) which was coming out of Data Filling Station.

As a result, the DPO’s right leg and right arm were fractured. His gunman and the driver also suffered injuries and were admitted to the DHQ hospital. The DPO was later referred to the Lahore General Hospital.

The Sahiwal police did not confirm the arrest of the trawler driver. A special team is, however, investigating the case.
