MUNICH: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio agreed on Friday that talks with Denmark on the running of Greenland would be pursued, amid US demands to control the Arctic territory, Denmark’s prime minister said.

Rubio held a 15-minute meeting with the prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, a US official confirmed without giving details.

Frederiksen said on X that there had been a “constructive talk” with Rubio and “work will continue as agreed in the high-level working group”.

Ahead of the talks, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Denmark hoped the meeting would give support to diplomatic efforts started to discuss US security concerns.

US President Donald Trump has unnerved European countries by saying Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, should come under US control.

Trump said last month however that an understanding had been reached with NATO secretary general Mark Rutte that would give the United States greater influence in the mineral-rich and strategically placed territory.
