KARACHI, June 14: Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the Anti-terrorism Court-V acquitted on Wednesday two accused in the murder case of an assistant sub-inspector on Monday.

The judge exonerated Sohail and Shahjahan from the charges as prosecution could not bring on record sufficient evidence against them.

The judge also issued a show-cause notice to the investigation officer, Inspector Saifullah Khan Niazi, for conducting defective investigation of the case.

The two accused, represented by Fazalur Rehman Awan, were prosecuted for killing ASI Riyaz Ahmed on Jan 3 on Mirza Adam Khan Road, Lyari.

The victim was going with his wife on his motorcycle when three motorcyclists intercepted him and shot him dead. The culprits also took away victim’s bike, mobile phone and Rs6,000 from his wife.

According to the prosecution, the SHO of Chakiwara, had arrested the two accused on Jan 7 after a shootout, and the accused disclosed to have been involved in the ASI’s murder during interrogation.

Special public prosecutor Mazhar Qayyum, examined 12 prosecution witnesses, including the victim’s wife.
