ISLAMABAD: The design and financial model of the proposed slaughterhouse has been finalised as the CDA has decided to get the project executed through a public-private partnership.

The CDA said that the state-of-the-art slaughterhouse will be set up at Humak, where an old and near underutilised facility is already available. During a meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa on Thursday, the proposed layout plan of the facility was presented by the consultant and reviewed by the participants.

“Detailed discussions were held on the progress slaughterhouse project. While briefing the meeting, it was informed that the Islamabad Slaughterhouse Project will be constructed under the Public-Private Partnership model. It will ensure the provision of modern and state-of-the-art facilities,” read a press release issued by the CDA.

Under the project, facilities such as a modern abattoir and chilling rooms will be provided. “All facilities of the slaughterhouse will be available under a service model. Similarly, a commercial area and an area for animal trading have also been allocated in the Slaughterhouse. The financial model of the project was also discussed in the meeting,” it said.

The CDA chairman directed that the design and model of the project be presented before the CDA Board and the Meat Board. He said the completion of the project will help meet the meat requirements of the residents of the twin cities and also assist in exporting meat to international markets.

He said that all resources were being utilised to provide best possible facilities to the citizens.

The briefing was informed that the initial study and operational and financial models for the slaughterhouse project had been prepared.

It is relevant to note that butchers of Islamabad wanted a separate slaughterhouse on an allotted plot in I-11, but the environment agency raised objections. The CDA had allotted a plot for the slaughterhouse only to replace it with a new one. The last plot was allotted in I-11 and Islamabad-based butchers are still making efforts for setting up a slaughterhouse on this plot.

However, CDA and the Meat Board opted for setting up the facility in Humak. Sources said that it was expected that Meat Board, CDA and the Rawalpindi administration will run the facility jointly.

The construction of a new slaughterhouse has been facing delays for years. The project remained under discussion for the last many years, but lacked practical steps.

“We are determined that this project will be executed soon as all studies, financial models and design of the project have been finalised. Now, we will place it before CDA board and Meat Board for their approval, before going for floating tender,” said an official of the CDA.
