PESHAWAR: Traffic response teams have been formed to help ease the congestion on roads and take action against traffic rules’ violators.

Each team comprising 10 personnel would be deployed at the four sectors, including Town, Cantonment, Headquarters and City, traffic police’s spokesperson Shahab Khan told Dawn, adding that the teams would be supervised by four superintendents of traffic police.

When asked about the mechanism for identification of congested roads, Mr Khan said the roads were being monitored. However, he added that in case someone found any road was blocked they could contact the traffic control at 1915 and 091-9211475 for immediate response.

Chief traffic police officer Dr Zahidullah said that the teams were established following detailed deliberations on traffic issues. He added meetings were held with senior officers from the central police office, capital city police officer, and people from different walks of life before forming the teams. He said that several ideas were floated in the meetings in order to overcome traffic issues, besides areas were also identified to be focused upon.

“We will not only be focusing on ensuring smooth traffic flow but also curbing violations of the no-parking areas and one-way roads,” Dr Zahidullah told Dawn.

Earlier, in a statement issued from his office, Dr Zahidullah said the purpose of raising the four teams was to provide citizens with facilities related to the traffic system.

He stated that the teams equipped with body cameras would be officially notified from the Command and Control Room at the traffic police’s headquarters so that the squads could reach in time to the troubled spot, control the congestion, and ensure smooth flow of traffic.

He stated that the traffic police were striving to provide all-travel facilities to citizens. Dr Zahidullah also stated that the traffic response teams would take action against violation of traffic laws, including use of flashing lights, tinted glass, and fancy number plates.
