LAHORE: The cultural heartbeat of Lahore is set to quicken as the Punjab Institute of Language, Art & Culture (Pilac) is going to launch the highly anticipated Punjab Natak Competition 2025 on Tuesday (today).

This vibrant, five-day theatrical extravaganza would be held at the Lahore Arts Council (Alhamra), The Mall. In a significant move to promote public engagement with the arts, attendance for all performances is completely free of charge.

The festival is designed as a grand confluence of academic talent and cultural expression, bringing together leading universities from across the province. Each participating institution will present original Punjabi plays, aiming at showcasing the linguistic pride, theatrical innovation and creative dynamism of Punjab’s youth.

The official schedule promises a rich and diverse line-up. The opening day, Nov 18, will see COMSATS University Islamabad, NFC Institute of Engineering & Technology Multan, and the University of Lahore take the stage with their productions ‘Beopari’, ‘Pind Di Baithak’, and ‘Peengh’, respectively, setting the tone for the days to follow.

The narrative journey would continue on Nov 19 with performances from the University of Central Punjab, Lahore Garrison University, and the University of Management & Technology. Their plays ‘Husan Gali’, a fresh take on the classic ‘Heer Ranjha,’ and ‘Bhagat Singh’ are expected to offer a compelling blend of traditional folklore and historical narrative.

Deepening the festival’s thematic range on Nov 20, the University of Home Economics, the University of Sargodha, and Kinnaird College for Women University will present ‘Sammi di War’, ‘Waiting Room’, and ‘Diwani’. These productions are poised to explore complex social issues and emotional landscapes, adding layers of depth and nuance to the competition. As the festival would progress towards its climax, Nov 21 will feature teams from Govt College University Faisalabad, FAST National University, and Punjab University with their entries, ‘Bazgasht, ‘Naguzir’, and ‘Diwa Mundri’.

The grand event on Saturday, Nov 22, is anticipated with great excitement when Beaconhouse National University (BNU) would stage its much-discussed performance, ‘Film Bani?’, while the University of Education Jauharabad and the Govt College University Lahore would conclude the event with powerful presentations of ‘Mohkam Singh’ and ‘Paniyan da Rakha’.

Commenting on the initiative, Pilac Director General Ghulam Saghir Shahid emphasized the profound impact of such cultural platforms.

“This competition is not merely an artistic showcase, it is a vital opportunity for character-building, fostering a clear vision, and empowering our youth creatively.”

He encouraged the students to embody independence, purpose and unwavering aspiration through their artistic endeavors. With the city abuzz in anticipation, enthusiasm is palpable among student participants, theatre aficionados, and cultural circles alike.

The Punjab Natak Competition 2025 is poised to be more than a festival. It is a significant celebration of Punjab’s rich dramatic heritage, its linguistic identity and the boundless creative energy of its younger generation, promising to captivate audiences and reinforce the enduring cultural spirit of the province.
