LAHORE, June 3: Wapda chairman Tariq Hameed said on Saturday that Wapda was carrying out a plan to improve transmission of electricity being produced through thermal and hydel modes in south and north of the country before next summer.

“We are setting up grid facilities at Sahiwal and Gakkhar to achieve this objective,” he said while talking to newsmen at the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) zonal office here.

He said the government had allocated an amount of Rs 38 billion for Wapda during the year 2006-07. Of this, Rs 10 billion would be spent for the acquisition of land for the upcoming mega dams, he added.

About the increased cost of power generation due to rise in the furnace oil and gas prices, he said that the government would compensate it by converting part of loans into equity and adjusting the proceeds of the KAPCO shares sold by the government.—APP
