SUKKUR: The Sultankot section of Indus Highway remained blocked for more than five hours on Friday due to a protest demonstration held after death of a woman and her three young children in a road accident.

The woman, Ameeran Shar, along with her sons — Shiraz, 7, Karam, 6, and Raham, 4 — were killed when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a container-mounted long vehicle along a link road off Indus Highway. Her husband, Ghulam Raza Shar, was critically injured in the accident and was rushed to a major hospital in Nawabshah for treatment.

Soon after the accident, a large number of Shar community members and residents of nearby localities gathered at the site and blocked the road and nearby highway section demanding arrest of the trailer driver, who had sped away after knocking down the family.

The protesters did not remove the bodies from the accident site — falling in the Faiz Ganj taluka of Khairpur district — during the course of their protest.

Leading the protesters, Mujahid Shar, Qambar Shar and others told local journalists that the Faiz Ganj police reached the site about five hours after the accident and started pursuing them to clear the way. They agreed to end the protest only after police held out the assurance that the trailer and its driver would be traced out and detained within the next two days.

The protesters then dispersed peacefully and the bodies were transported to the Faiz Ganj Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination and other legal formalities.
