KP police get modern equipment to enhance nighttime surveillance

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed on Friday said the police were being equipped with modern gadgets and enabled to effectively counter the newly-adopted strategies of terrorists.

“The modern gadgets, being provided to the police, will make a noticeable difference in our force’s capacity to attack terrorists and defend themselves against attacks at night,” the IGP said during a special ceremony held here to hand over thermal vision scopes and weapon-mounted sights, equipped with thermal technology, to various districts and units of the police to enhance their capacity.

Mr Hameed said that the gadgets would help in countering terrorist attacks and locating the terrorists’ positions.

He added that the process of enhancing the capacity of the police in the war against terrorism would continue.

A statement issued by the police chief’s office read that 147 modern technology-equipped SKUA and 363 TWS Hawk thermal scopes and weapon-mounted sights were handed over to all districts and units of the police.

It added that 10 modern M249 heavy machine guns and four modern anti-drone guns, were given to various KP districts adding that anti-drone gun EMG 300 were handed over to North Waziristan DPO Waqar Ahmed and an HMG M249 to Deputy Commandant (Elite) Aslam Nawaz Khan.

Also, heavy machine guns were handed over to the Rapid Response Force teams operating in various districts, two anti-drone guns to the district police officer of Bajaur and one to the district police officer of Bannu.

The police said that the anti-drone guns would help police in Waziristan, Bannu and Bajaur to counter drone attacks carried out by terrorists and strengthen Elite Force and RRF against terrorists.

“These gadgets will enhance KP police’s capacity for nighttime surveillance, defensive measures against attacks and identifying attackers from a distance,” the statement read.

It added that the sights and scopes could display and target any vehicle from a distance of four kilometres at night and would ensure unidentified vehicles never remained hidden from KP police.

It read that senior police officers performing duties at the Central Police Office were also present on the occasion.
