Day of walkovers

KARACHI, June 1: It was a day of walkovers in the 10th Anti Tobacco Day tennis tournament on Thursday at CDGK Sports Complex, Kashmir Road, on Thursday.

Top seed Nomi Qamar eased into men’s singles last four by virtue of getting a walkover against Akbar Hayat.

Similarly, teenaged Marium Madraswala came all the way only to know after waiting for a long time that her opponent Uzma Zakaria was bed ridden and won’t be able to come for her match.

Ahad Hasan Khan, Mustafa Zaidi, Ghulam Abbas, Jahangir Rashid and Omer Shahid made it to the last eight when their opponent failed to show up in the Juniors U-18 matches.

Joining Nomi in the men’s singles pre-finals were second seed Jalil Khan, third seed Adnan Khan and fourth seed Khalid Ali Nazar.

Jalil beat Ghulam Abbas with ease 6-1, 6-0, Adnan got the better of Mubashir Afridi 6-2, 6-3 while Khalid downed Asfand Rauf 6-3, 6-4.

Interestingly, Jalil played his first round match against Ibrahim Tawab at the Modern Club and was home 6-2, 6-0.

In the only match of women’s singles, Shandana Khan prevailed over Sofia Khan 6-3, 6-4.

Boys U-15 singles: (pre-quarterfinals) Zuhair Raza bt Mubashir Raza 6-0, 6-0; Umer Usman bt Ikram Khan 6-4, 6-4; Ali Imran bt Mahesh Bhatia 1-6, 7-5, 6-4; Azher Qureshi bt Talha Zubair 6-0, 6-1.

Juniors singles: (pre-quarterfinals) Abdul Rehman bt Salman Ahmed 6-3, 6-4; Abbas Raza bt Ali Zubair 6-2, 6-2; Zuhair Raza bt Mahesh Bhatia 6-2, 6-2; Ahad Hasan Khan w/o Nasir Mushtaq; Muatafa Zaidi w/o Talha Zubair; Ghulam Abbas w/o Ibrahim Tawab; Jahangir Rashid w/o Mubashir Razzak; Omer Shahid w/o Mohsin Nadir.
