KARACHI, June 1: Terming the murder of TV cameraman Munir Sangi a ‘target killing’, journalist union leaders have accused a Sindh provincial minister of having plotted the murder.

The cameraman of a private channel was gunned down when he was covering a tribal clash in Larkana early this week.

Addressing a protest meeting at Karachi Press Club on Thursday, leaders of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists and the Karachi Union of Journalists called upon the Supreme Court to take suo motu action and appoint a judge of the Sindh High Court to conduct a judicial inquiry.

They expressed dissatisfaction over actions taken by the Sindh government in connection with the incident and said that the journalist community would continue its movement till the ‘real culprit’ was brought to book.

The Sindh government has suspended the district police officer of Larkana, a DSP, and the SHO of the police station concerned and announced an amount of Rs300,000 as compensation to be paid to the heirs of the slain journalist.

The provincial government has also appointed the Larkana sessions judge to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

The meeting urged Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad and Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim to suspend the minister from the cabinet and hold an in-depth inquiry into his alleged involvement in the incident.—Online
