PESHAWAR, May 31: One person was killed and 30 others were wounded when a severe storm struck Peshawar and adjoining areas on Wednesday, causing a major power breakdown in the city.

Winds blowing at 76kmph uprooted trees, smashed billboards and damaged electric cables in several parts of the district. Five vehicles parked at a market in Karkhano area adjacent to Khyber Agency were damaged when a huge billboard collapsed over them.

About 30 people with multiple injuries were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital where doctors said one woman, Nadia, succumbed to wounds. Most of the injured were allowed to go home after treatment.

Peshawar Electricity Supply Company officials said the windstorm had damaged transmission lines in several districts.
