GUJRANWALA, May 29: Around 120 aspirants for recruitment as traffic police sub-inspectors fainted during physical fitness tests due to heat here on Monday. More than 1,600 candidates were reportedly taking part in a race competition as a part of the fitness test at Wapda Town. Of them, around 120 fainted and fell on the ground. The police officials who were supervising the test called the doctors from the DHQ hospital and state-run dispensaries to provide the candidates first aid.

It is learnt that the doctors who reached there had no necessary medicines. Most of the candidates, complaining of headache and vomiting, had to be shifted to the DHQ hospital. Two brothers died a few years ago during physical test at same place.

BUSTED: Wahando police claimed on Monday to have busted a four-member gang of robbers after a brief encounter on Aimanabad Road and recovered snatched motorcycles and other valuables from their possession.

Reports said the police conducted a raid on a tip-off. On seeing the police, the gangsters opened fire. After a brief crossfire, they surrendered and the police arrested them. They were identified as Naeem, Adeel, Javed and Saleem.

Meanwhile, DIG Zafar Abass Lak and DPO Dr Arif Mushtaq announced cash prize and commendation certificates for the raiding party.

EXAM CENTRES: Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education chairman Masudul Haq on Monday visited about 27 examination centres of intermediate part-I and part-II annual examination 2006 in the city.

Candidates were taking English language paper when the chairman conducted raids at the centres. Mr Haq also paid surprise visits to examination centres in Daska and Sambrial in the second group paper.

He expressed his satisfaction over the arrangements and directed the staff to ensure transparency. The chairman had reportedly checked as many as 19 examination centres in Gujrat and Kunja on Saturday.
