FAISALABAD, May 25: As many as 100 fresh cases of gastroenteritis were reported in the city on Thursday, while no casualty occurred.

Officials of various government agencies involved in disease control efforts said continuous arrival of fresh cases at various public and private healthcare centres was alarming.

The disease has reportedly claimed 11 lives in the city, while over 7,000 people have been affected by it during the last eight days.

The doctors at the General Hospital, Ghulam Muhammadabad, and Allied Hospital expressed satisfaction over recovery rate of the admitted patients but they were concerned over the arrival of fresh cases.

They said if the situation continued for two to three days more it would be a serious development.

General Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Khawaja Muhammad Anees said the gastro bacteria could become activated in three to four days after consumption of water.

Residents of the affected areas alleged that the water being supplied by Wasa still gave foul smell, which might be the cause of fresh disease cases.

They claimed that Wasa had mixed a huge quantity of chlorine in the water to get positive results from laboratories. They suspected the high percentage of chlorine was affecting people adversely.
