SUKKUR: Widespread rains lashed several districts of Sindh’s upper, central and lower regions on Tuesday disturbing the routine life in cities and towns by causing urban flooding. The rains also badly affected utility services, mainly power supply.
A man, Shujra Golo and his young son Saifuddin, drowned when the Indus River overtopped its bank near the riverine area of Kandhkot as water level continued to rise due to unprecedented flows coming from the northern areas of the country.
The victims fell into a deep pond created by the spillage from the river, said officials at the Gablo police station of Kandhkot.
Divers among the local residents fished out their bodies which were sent to Jeewan Khan Golo village for burial.
Meanwhile, several spells of light to moderate rain pounded most areas of Kandhkot-Kashmore, Jacobabad and Qambar-Shahdadkot districts after Sukkur and Shikarpur districts received drizzle during the previous night.
Hyderabad and its adjoining areas received two back-to-back moderate spell of rain in the evening. The first spell of rain, coupled with lightning, started at about 9:30pm and continued for about 25 minutes. After a brief interval, another moderate spell pounded the area for 45 minutes.
Drizzle continued till late in the evening.
The rain caused inundation of roads and streets.
Power supply to parts of the city remained suspended during the rainfall and the power utility was making efforts to normalise the situation. Light rain also hit the area early in the morning.
The Met office at airport recorded 50mm of rain from 8am to 10:30pm which it city office recorded 37.8mm rainfall.
Intermittent rainfall was reported in Mirpurkhas and its surrounding areas during the day. The main thoroughfares and street were inundated causing trouble to commuters and pedestrians.
Sanitation workers were seen nowhere during and after the rainfall to drain the rainwater.
In several low-lying localities, rainwater mixed with sewage entered into houses.
Power supply to many areas remained suspended till late in the evening.
A heavy spell of rain also battered Matli, Golarchi and other areas of Badin district on Monday night. The rainfall continued into Tuesday morning paralysing people’s routine life. In some localities, knee-deep water had accumulated. Many houses and shops were inundated.
Tando Bago, Talhar and Khoski towns experienced light showers and intermittent drizzling.
There were reports of light, moderate or heavy rainfall in Tharparkar, Nagarparkar, Umerkot, Thatta, Sujawal, Sanghar and some other areas on Monday night and Tuesday.
The Met office has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Sindh for two more days.
