LAHORE: All district administrations in Punjab have been directed to ensure the transfer of the entire material and human resources related to water supply and wastewater drainage to the newly-created Water and Sanitation Agencies (Wasas) by Aug 15.

The direction was issued after a high-level meeting held here at the Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering Department on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the participants discussed the progress being made towards establishing an efficient and integrated water supply and sewerage system across the province.

They were of the view that the formation of new Wasas in 10 districts has entered its final phase as part of the first phase of this initiative.

All newly-appointed managing directors (MDs) of Wasas, on the occasion, shared updates on the progress in their respective districts.

They were also directed to complete the formation process of their respective agencies. They also told the secretary of the department about the delays in handing over the water supply and drainage-related resources, assets, etc.

“Officers failing to meet the targets will not be allowed to continue in their current positions,” Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal told the MDs. He said a search committee has also been formed to monitor the performance of all new MDs.

He further stated that besides Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Multan and Faisalabad, Wasas have also been established in 10 more districts in the first phase to ensure the provision of clean drinking water and a modern sewerage system for the public.

“Later, the Wasas will also be established in more districts across the province to provide clean water supply and sanitation services across the province,” he added.

DC: During inspection of Karol Ghati, China Scheme, and Tariq Shaheed Road, a meeting presided over by the Lahore deputy commissioner assessed the ongoing administrative and sanitation operations.

Shalimar assistant commissioner provided a detailed briefing on the various initiatives in the tehsil, on the occasion.

DC Syed Musa Raza issued directives to Wasa and LWMC to construct a protective wall along Chhota Ravi, addressing the absence of safety barriers.

He also pointed out waste accumulation on Tariq Road, besides issuing directions to Wasa to clear blockages in the tehsil.

The teams detected an illegal network supplying power to as many as 20 houses. The teams also submitted applications at respective police stations for registration of FIRs against power thieves, besides imposing heavy fines on them, according to a spokesperson.
