LAHORE: The federal government on Monday appointed retired Lt Gen Muhammad Saeed as chairman of the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), relieving Naveed Asghar Chaudhry from the acting charge.

A notification was also issued on Monday by the Establishment Division, confirming the appointment of Mr Saeed as new chief of the authority.

According to notification, Mr Saeed’s appointment has been made with immediate effect under Section 42 (2) of the Wapda Act, 1958 and 12(1) and 13(1) of Wapda (appointment and terms of service of chairman and member) regulations 2020 on terms and conditions (pay allowances and facilities) as prescribed in regulation 5 of the regulations ibid.

During his military service, Mr Saeed has served as the chief of general staff (CGS), 5-Corps Karachi corps commander, Sindh Rangers DG and National Defence University president. He has also served in the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) as DG analysis. After his appointment, Mr Saeed also met with the premier Shehbaz Sharif who congratulated him on getting the post. The new chairman is likely to assume charge of the office on Tuesday (today)

Earlier, Naveed Asghar Chaudhry (member finance) served as acting Wapda chief after being appointed in third week of June this year. He had assumed the charge after the resignation of the then Wapda chief retired Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani. Before Mr Ghani, retired Lt General Muzammil had served as the Wapda chairman. Mr Muzammil had resigned from the office in May 2022, citing personal reasons.
