A MOMENT OF PRIDE: Muhammad Shahzad, a 64-year-old Pakistani rower, recently made history by winning a gold medal at the Asian Indoor Rowing Championship in Thailand. He set an Asian record with a time of 1:32.30 in the 60+ singles category, defeating his younger Indian opponent. This remarkable achievement showcases Shehzad’s determination and discipline, inspiring athletes and individuals worldwide. Shehzad’s victory contributed to Pakistan’s impressive performance at the championship, where the country secured 14 medals, including 10 gold medals. He dedicated his win to Pakistani armed forces and the nation’s martyrs. Shehzad’s inspiring story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and passion.

HEALTH CAMPS: The challenges being faced by the residents of the ‘minority compound’ near Civil Hospital Karachi are significant. Despite the proximity to a major healthcare facility in the city, they lack regular access to clean water and proper waste management, which add to the health risks, like dengue, malaria, skin infections, etc. The government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should set up regular community health camps to provide free medical check-ups to the community and to spread health awareness.

CASHLESS ECONOMY: Ahead of the recent budget, the government appeared determined to accelerate the country’s transition to a digital and cashless economy. It is a huge relief that the government has stopped short of forcing transactions through credit or debit cards for puchasing fuel. As is common knowledge, a large segment of the Pakistani population does not have these cards. While there is nothing wrong with introducing a cashless economy, we must have proper systems in place before going for the kill. Getting a debit/credit card in any case requires a yearly fee. Who is going to pay for that?
