KARACHI: Reckless and negligent driving claimed lives of three citizens in separate incidents involving heavy vehicles in the metropolis on Wednesday, police and rescue officials said.

A young man and a teenager were killed when a water tanker hit them near Government Abdullah College for Women.

Paposh Nagar SHO Shaukat Awan said the victims were on their way towards Banaras Chowk on a motorcycle when the tanker, coming from North Nazimabad bridge, hit them. As a result, Zubair Irfan, 20, and his friend Ayan Mujahid, 18, were killed.

The incident enraged area people who caught the driver of the heavy vehicle and subjected him to beating. They also attempted to torch the tanker but the police brought the situation under control.

The driver was arrested and the tanker impounded, the officer added.

The bodies were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

In Korangi, a man was killed while another injured when a bus hit their motorcycle near Future Colony.

Sharafi Goth SHO Raja Khalid said the victims were on a motorcycle when a bus of a private company ran over them, resulting in instant death of Sajjad Ali and injuries to another person. The driver, Mohammed Yaqub, was arrested and the vehicle impounded.

The body and injured were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Two die in hit-and-run accidents

In another incident, a young man was killed while his wife was injured in an accident on Superhighway.

Gadap City SHO Sarfraz Jatoi said the couple was traveling on a bike when a hit-and-run driver hit them near Kathore. The injured couple was shifted to a nearby private hospital where Ali Asghar, 28, was pronounced dead. His wife sustained minor injuries.

The officer said the relatives told the police that they did not want any legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, a policeman was killed in hit-and-run incident in Baldia Town.

Saeedabad SHO Pervez Solangi said that the policeman, Asif Mujtaba, was on his way to perform duty when an unknown vehicle hit him near SP Baldia office. He died on the spot. The body was shifted to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities.
