KARACHI: Unknown robbers looted gold jewellery from the lockers of a microfinance bank branch in North Nazimabad, police said on Monday.
They said that a private security guard had been detained for his alleged involvement in facilitating his accomplices in the heist that took place on Sunday.
The held guard, identified as Amanullah, was currently being interrogated, the police said.
They said that the guard opened the gate of the bank, located near Five Star Chowrangi, at night for his around a dozen accomplices, who travelled in a white corolla and one rickshaw. The suspects brought with themselves a welding machine to cut open the lockers, a police statement said.
Central SSP Zeeshan Shafiq Siddiqi said that the Special Investigation Unit was investigating the case.
North Nazimabad police SHO Irfan Anwar told Dawn that the microfinance bank tended to lend money to its customers against their gold jewellery.
He said the gold ornaments had been looted but the bank management told the police that they would assess the situation on Tuesday (today).
He said that the bank staff would likely to inform the police about the extent of the looted gold then.
