KARACHI / QUETTA: Another earthquake, this time of magnitude 3.5 on the Richter scale, hit parts of Malir on Sunday afternoon, spreading fear in the locality and adjoining areas, officials said on Monday.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the tremor originated at 3.35pm at a depth of nine kilometres with its epicentre located four kilometres southeast of Malir.
The department’s data show that the city has experienced more than 30 low-intensity tremors since June 1, with most of them near Malir and areas near Quaidabad, Gadap, DHA City, DHA and Korangi.
Their intensity so far has ranged from 1.8 magnitude to 3.6 magnitude on the Richter scale.
As many as 10 tremors followed by a dozen more were reported on two June 2 and June 3.
According to experts, the fault lines passing through the areas of Korangi and Malir have become active after several decades and causing minor earthquakes in areas close to them.
The experts have rejected public concern, stating that the seismic activity will gradually settle down.
Previously, they have pointed out that minor seismic activities “pre-empt high-intensity earthquakes” by constantly releasing accumulated energy within the tectonic plates.
Also on Monday, Gwadar and Ormara experienced mild tremors at around 5:14pm.
Officials said that the magnitude of the quake in Gwadar was 3.0 on the Richter scale, with the epicentre located eight kilometres northwest of the port city.
Similarly, in Ormara, the 3.1-magnitude earthquake was reported at a depth of 10kms, with the epicentre located 118kms southeast of the city.
No casualties or property damage have been reported as a result of the earthquakes.
