KARACHI: A suspected thief was shot dead by security guards in the Keamari area early on Wednesday morning, police said.

The Jackson police added that around five-six thieves attempted to steal the pole-mounted transformer (PMT) of Pak Shaheen Yard near Ziauddin Hospital. The PMT fell on the floor which created a loud bang.

As a result, the yard’s manager and guards came out. On seeing them, the suspects resorted to firing. The guards returned fire, after which one suspect was killed on the spot while another sustained a bullet wound to his back. Their other accomplices managed to escape from the spot.

The body and the wounded were shifted to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi.

The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained till late in the night.

Policeman injured by suspect dies

A policeman who was injured by a suspect on a roadside died during treatment on Wednesday, officials said.

The Docks police said a man was riding a motorcycle when two policemen, also on a two-wheeler, indicated him to stop in Machhar Colony on Tuesday night. However, the suspect tried to flee and hit the policemen’s motorcycle with his own. As a result, the policeman, Abdul Wajid, fell on the road and suffered injuries to his head.

He was initially taken to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi from where he was shifted to Aga Khan University Hospital where he died during treatment.

The fleeing suspect was arrested by the police with help from the public.
