KARACHI: Two senior officials of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) were on Saturday suspended for their alleged involvement in theft of water.

According to a KWSC order, executive engineer Ahsanullah Shaikh and assistant executive engineer S.M Ahsan are hereby placed under suspension on account of gross negligence in preventing illegal water theft.

The suspension came on the directives of Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, who is the chairman of the KWSC board.

During a visit to KWSC installations on Saturday, he said that strict legal action would be taken against the officials involved in water theft in Karachi.

The mayor, who along with KWSC Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui and Chief Operating Officer Asadullah Khan, visited various areas to review the water crisis in the city.

He said that departmental action would also be taken against the officers involved in water theft.

According to a press statement, the aim of the visit was to make the crackdown on water theft in the city more effective and faster.

The mayor said that a complete, transparent and impartial investigation into water theft would be conducted. “Water is the right of citizens only, no one will be allowed to steal it,” he added.

The mayor directed the KWSC to take all steps to ensure fair and uninterrupted supply of water in the city.
