ISLAMABAD, May 3: A German company has proposed to the government to change the site of the Bhasha dam, saying it will not only save the Chalas city but also increase the dam’s storage capacity and reduce the cost of the project.

A representative of the German company, Leamher, told Online that a feasibility report in this context had been prepared in collaboration with a Pakistani company, NDC.

The feasibility report suggested shifting the dam site 30 kilometres away from Chalas, which would not only increase the water storage capacity but also reduce the number of affected people.

The new location of the dam, proposed in the report, is surrounded by mountains from three sides and a wall will have to be constructed only on one side, thus reducing the cost of the project.

Sources said an unofficial copy of the feasibility report had been handed over to Water and Power Development Authority and a survey had been initiated to assess the number of people likely to be affected by the dam.

They said an official copy of the Germany company would be handed over to the government by June.—Online
