KARACHI: The City Council on Monday demanded that the provincial police and law enforcement agencies promptly arrest the killers of Amir Bhashani alias Amir Bhutto of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and bring them to justice.

Through a unanimous resolution, the council strongly condemned the murder of the PPP’s local leader and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. The council members said Mr Bhutto was a compassionate, friendly, well-mannered and the man who served the people of his area without discrimination.

The council meeting, presided over by Mayor Murtaza Wahab, also unanimously adopted a resolution to condole the death of PPP Senator Taj Haider. The resolution was presented by Muhammad Juman Darwan, Javed Sheikh, Musarrat Niazi and Dil Muhammad.

An identical condolence resolution for Mr Haider was presented by opposition leader Advocate Saifuddin, Afaq Baig, Hafiz Usama and Khoraj Muhammad.

Those who spoke on the resolutions included Imran Shah, Advocate Saifuddin, Imran Shah, Juman Darwan, Hafiz Usama, Maqbool Ahmed, Musarrat Niazi, Muhammad Wasim Mirza and Basheer Khaskheli.

The session also expressed condolences on the passing of Professor Khurshid Ahmad and acknowledged that his death had created a significant void in the intellectual and academic world, which would be felt for a long time.

Later, the session was adjourned to a date to be later announced.
