PESHAWAR: In a significant step toward wildlife conservation, the climate change, forest, environment & wildlife department has installed specialised birdhouses at Kata Kanri Knowledge Park, Kohat The birdhouses have been installed on the directions of secretary forest and wildlife Shahid Zaman, according to a statement issued here on Friday.

This initiative aims to provide safe nesting habitats for local bird species affected by habitat loss due to deforestation and urbanisation. Additional birdhouses will be installed in the coming weeks to expand this ecological effort. Many bird species rely on tree cavities for nesting, but deforestation and urbanisation have reduced natural habitats.

Birdhouses act as artificial cavities, offering shelter for cavity-nesting birds. A properly designed knowledge park’s birdhouse will keep birds safe from predators (cats, raccoons, snakes) via baffles, correct hole sizes, and placement and harsh weather (rain, wind, extreme heat) with proper ventilation, drainage, and insulation.

A birdhouse helps declining species recover by providing safe breeding spaces and encourages insect-eating birds, which naturally control pests (mosquitoes, caterpillars, beetles).

Mr Zaman said: “This initiative reflects our commitment to preserving KP’s rich biodiversity. By restoring safe habitats, we’re safeguarding both wildlife and the ecosystem services they provide for communities.”
