SARGODHA: The University of Sargodha launched its 23rd annual sports gala with a colourful ceremony at the university cricket ground.

Punjab Minister for Law, Communication and Works Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharath was chief guest, while Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Qaisar Abbas was guest of honour.

The event featured a guard of honour from the university’s security wing and traditional performances, including a horse dance. A kabaddi match featuring national-level players was the highlight of the opening day.

To encourage faculty involvement, a tug-of-war competition between the faculties of sciences and social sciences drew cheers from the crowd.

Minister Bharath said sports build character, leadership, discipline and teamwork. He said the Punjab government is actively promoting sports through talent hunt programmes to identify and support emerging athletes for national and international platforms. He praised the university’s commitment to extracurricular development.

Prof Dr Qaisar Abbas said the university’s vision is to develop not just academically strong but well-rounded, responsible people. He mentioned the university’s investments in sports infrastructure, including gymnasiums, open grounds, and trained staff.

The event attracted students, faculty, and guests from across Punjab. The competition lineup for male students includes athletics, badminton, table tennis, chess, basketball, and tennis, while female students will take part in cricket, handball, football, kabaddi, tug-of-war, and shooting ball.
