RAWALPINDI, April 30: An under-trial prisoner was found dead in Adiala Jail on Sunday. According to jail authorities Mohammad Nadeem committed suicide by hanging himself with his waist-band tied to the ceiling of the toilet, however, jail sources claimed that the victim was tortured to death on Saturday.

Inspector General Prisons (Punjab) Sarfraz Ahmed Mufti on contact said that Mr Nadeem committed suicide by hanging himself as he was mentally sick.

The IG prison dispelled the impression that the prisoner died during torture. A judicial magistrate has been called on to examine the scene, he added.

He said postmortem of the deceased would be carried out with the permission of his family. Besides Nadeem, five other members of his family — an uncle and four brothers — were also in the same barrack No 3. Mr Mufti said the prisoner had been under treatment for mental sickness and was put in the barrack on doctor’s advise. The deceased was arrested by Murree police on charges of his involvement in a robbery case.
