KARACHI: The city administration on Tuesday imposed a complete ban on the dumping of garbage and solid waste debris in drains for two months.

According to a notification issued by Commissioner Karachi Hassan Naqvi, the ban was imposed under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and strict legal action would be taken against those found disposing of waste in drains during the said period.

The order stated that cases would be registered against violators under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Talking to Dawn, the commissioner said that all private, public and autonomous institutions had been urged to play their due role in improving the city’s sanitation conditions.

He also instructed private and public institutions to follow the garbage collection and disposal system and collaborate with the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) for proper waste disposal.

The commissioner held a meeting with senior city administration officers and representatives from various institutions, including the SSWMB, deputy commissioners, Cantonment Boards, KPT, Civil Aviation Authority, Port Qasim Authority, the Federal B Area Association of Trade and Industry, the Landhi Association of Trade and Industry, NED University and the Market Committee Sabzi Mandi.
