Gaza ‘s only electricity generating facility is a critical part of the territory’s infrastructure, Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum reports from Nuseirat, Gaza.
“It was originally designed to provide 140 megawatts of power. Yet, it has often operated at much lower capacity — sometimes as low as 60 megawatts — due to fuel shortages, damage and technical limitations. This is far from enough to supply the entire Gaza Strip.
“Now, due to Israeli military operations, the destruction of electricity networks has severely impacted the plant’s ability to function. Before it can resume operations, the fragile power grid must first be rehabilitated,” he said.
The damage has also affected water desalination plants, forcing civilians to rely on alternative sources, which are becoming increasingly unsustainable amid the ongoing blockade and humanitarian crisis, he added.
