SHANGLA: A local leader of Awami National Party was killed and his driver sustained injuries when a jeep they were traveling in plunged into a ravine in Sangrai area of Shangla on Friday.

Officials at the Karora police station said that ANP’s Mutawakil Khan was going home in a jeep after offering condolences to relatives of a deceased person when the vehicle’s brakes failed and it fell into a ravine. As a result, Mutawakil died on the spot.

The police officials said that the local people rushed to the scene and retrieved the two persons from the ravine.

According to the police, Mutawakil’s body was also dispatched to his Barkana home town for burial.

Mutawakil was ANP’s provincial deputy general secretary. He also held the office of district general secretary of the party. He contested the provincial assembly elections several times on Qaumi Watan Party and ANP tickets.

ANP president Aimal Wali Khan, PML-N Khyber Pakhtunkhwa president Amir Muqam, UN education ambassador Malala Yousafzai’s father Ziauddin Yousafzai, QWP chairman Aftab Ahmad Sherpao, KP Opposition Leader Ibadullah Khan, MPA Mohammad Rashad Khan, MPA Abdul Munim and other local leaders expressed shock over the sudden death of Mutawakil Khan.
