US Major General Jasper Jeffers, the US representative on a committee overseeing the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, says there has been “significant progress” towards full implementation but did not state whether Israel would fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by Tuesday, as it is obligated to do under the agreement, Al Jazeera reports.
Jeffers said in a statement that “all population centres in the Southern Litani Area” would be under Lebanese control by Tuesday.
Israeli officials have said that despite the terms of the ceasefire, their forces may remain in southern Lebanon past the deadline and even set up positions near the border in five areas. Lebanese officials have said they will not accept this.
