KARACHI: The Sindh government has asked the federal government to approach Interpol for issuance of a red notice against alleged Lyari gangster Wasiullah Lakho, officials said.

Confirming this to Dawn, DIG-South Syed Asad Raza said on Saturday that Lakho was involved in 25 heinous crimes from 2009 to 2014 in different areas of Lyari and was declared absconder by courts.

The police had been searching for years but couldn’t trace him, and they suspected that the fugitive might have fled abroad, the DIG added.

The Sindh home department, through a letter dated Dec 31, 2024, asked the interior secretary for issuance of a perpetual warrant of arrest against Lakho through Interpol.

Official correspondence showed that the Sindh inspector general of police had requested the provincial government to take this measure. The letter also said the travel history of the accused was not available with the police.

A social activist of Lyari said Lakho had once contested the general elections from the platform of a political party in Sindh. However, he later joined the Uzair Baloch-led gang when one of the ring leaders of the gang war, Ghaffar Zikri, became active against him.

Lakho is a resident of Nayabad in Lyari and has also been allegedly involved in extortion from builders and traders.

JAAC ban

Though the JAAC’s demands are open to scrutiny, banning any political organisation — as long as it remains committed to peaceful activism — is undemocratic.
