GUJRANWALA, April 18: The provision of sugar for Rs20 per kilo could not be started in the district despite a chief minister’s order as mill owners have refused to supply the commodity at this price, it is learnt.

A source said the chief minister had ordered the provision of sugar for Rs20 per kilo from April 1, and the district administration set up 50 sale points for the purpose. The government also asked the Tandialanwala sugar mills, Faisalabad, and Kashmir Sugar Mills, Jhang, to supply sugar at this rate.

The district administration offered to bear the packing and transportation expenditures, but the mill owners categorically refused to provide the sugar at this price, saying they would have to bear a heavy loss by doing so.

They said if the government wanted to provide sugar at cheaper price, it should give a relief to mill owners in sales tax.

A senior officer of the district administration said the city district government had completed ground work for setting up sale points and inducting contractors.

KIDS RECOVERED: A bailiff raided a private company and recovered two minors who were illegally detained there by the company owner in Farid Town here on Tuesday.
