Sewerage water seeping into canal

Published April 19, 2006

SADIQABAD, April 18: Sewerage water is being pumped through the metal pipes crossing the Adam-Sahaba distributary flowing through the city centre.

The contaminated water is being thrown into watercourses of Chak 165-P situated towards the left bank of the canal since 1980 to-date. The pipes have become rusty and the sewerage water is seeping into the canal below.

The canal has turned into a source of bathing and washing for the downtrodden and the people living in Abid Colony on the right bank of the canal and the residents of Chak 165-P on its left bank.

Residents of limited resources are compelled to use the polluted canal water. Moreover, the contaminated water is being stored in the reservoirs of the old water-supply network without proper filtration. The hazards of such polluted water being supplied to the common man are alarming.

The practice has been going on unchecked for long. The people have lodged verbal and written protests to rectify the situation, but to no avail.

The quantum of rust is increasing manifold everyday and big fountains of dirty water can be observed on the banks of the canal.

Since the inception of the local body system, it is being projected that billions of rupees are being provided for the district and tehsil tiers for development.

An unelected nominee of PML-Q Shaukat Daud, a former provincial minister, is being heard every week as saying that millions of development funds are being generated by him through the courtesy of the chief minister.

But nobody is aware where these funds are being utilised in the rural or urban localities.

Similarly, slogan-mongering by MNA Rais Muneer Ahmad Khan is also in its climax, projecting the claim of getting sanctioned projects worth billions of rupees for the tehsil. On the other hand, the common people can scarcely believe the lofty claims as the sewerage water is seeping into the canal through rusty pipes. Likewise, the comprehensive water supply scheme involving an expenditure of Rs60 million is a mere dream since the era of the late Ghulam Haider Wyne as chief minister.
