LAHORE: Main-round matches in different age categories were played on the opening day of the Khawaja Iftikhar Memorial Tennis Championship here at the Nishtar Sports Complex on Tuesday.

In the opening-round matches of the men’s singles event, Ahmed Nael defeated Abdullah Adnan 6-3, 6-4.

In other matches of the same category, Barkatullah outclassed Shehryar Anees 6-2, 6-2; Yousuf Khalil outplayed Ahtesham Humayun 6-1, 6-4; Mohammad Shoaib registered a downed Shahzad Khan 6-3, 6-3; Aqeel Khan struggled to beat Bilal Asim 6-1, 3-6, 6-1; Mohammad Abid ousted Ahmed Chaudhry 6-2, 6-3; Abubakar Talha brushed aside Haider Ali Rizwan 6-1, 6-3 while Muzammil Murtaza overpowered Uzair Khan 6-2, 6-1.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Nael and Heera Ashiq got the better of Shahzad Khan-Sami Zeb Khan duo 6-1, 6-4 in the men’s doubles event.

In the women’s singles, S. Ayesha Shahid outplayed Sania Zara 6-1, 6-2; Zunaisha Noor squeezed past Rahat-ul-Ain 6-1, 6-3; Laiba Iqbal made short work of Momina Imran 6-0, 6-2 while Fajar Fayyaz and Bismal Zia got walkover against Aima and Zeevar, respectively.
