As today marks 76th years since the adoption of the Convention on the Prevention & Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called for ramping up action “to prevent this atrocious crime”.
“Yet, in a world plagued by division and violence, the dark spectre of genocide is still with us,” the UN chief said on X.
His statement comes just days after Amnesty International declared Israel’s action in Gaza during its ongoing offensive as genocide against Palestinians.
