Published April 9, 2006

KARACHI, April 8: Power failures continued unabated on Saturday in various localities as people complained of prolonged absence of electricity in their respective areas and criticized the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation for resorting to unannounced load-shedding.

The complained of power breakdowns were received from Federal B Area, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, North Karachi, New Karachi, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, PIB Colony, Malir, Orangi Town, Lyari and some other areas.

A resident of Federal B Area Block-15 said his locality experienced power failures twice. In the morning, the power supply was disrupted for a half an hour and later in the evening, there was no power supply for over two hours.

He said that the load was increased during peak hours, but the KESC had been resorting to loadshedding during off peak hours.

A consumer from Gulshan-i-Zahoor, in Lines Area, complained that his locality remains without power for two hours daily. Besides, there were voltage fluctuations which were posing a threat to electrical appliances.

He said that residents had time and again lodged complaints with the KESC, but no action had so far been taken.

People from various areas, including Sharifabad, Liaquatabad, Gharibabad and parts of Nazimabad, said that the power supply remained suspended in their areas for at least one and a half hour on Saturday evening.

Another resident of Liaquatabad said prolonged power failures had become the order of the day and the KESC officials have been shifting blame on city governemnt which was carrying construction of an underpass.
