QUETTA: Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti has expressed concern over the rise in poliovirus cases in Balochistan and sought a report from health authorities.

He also voiced his dissatisfaction with the performance of the provincial Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) in combating the spread of the deadly virus.

A case of Wild Poliovirus Type 1 (WPV-1) has been reported in a minor girl in Zhob district, bringing the total number of poliovirus cases in Balochistan to 16 so far this year. Nationwide, 28 cases have been reported this year, with the majority occurring in Balochistan.

“I expect a thorough inquiry report on the polio cases reported in various parts of the province,” CM Bugti directed the health department.

Emphasising the need for collaborative efforts, he said the community must unite to combat this crippling disease. “Every new case causes significant concern for the government,” he lamented, noting that while other nations pursue development, Balochistan struggles with poliovirus.

He urged the parents to ensure that their children under the age of five receive anti-polio drops and called on the provincial EOC to initiate a special drive to ensure every child is vaccinated.
