MULTAN: Aliya Riaz’s fighting half century went in vain as South Africa edged Pakistan by 10 runs in the first Twenty20 International of the three-match series here at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Aliya came on to the crease when Pakistan were struggling at 21-4 by the seventh over in their pursuit of a target of 133 runs and went on to smash an unbeaten 52 off 39 balls — the knock featuring five fours and six.

She was ably supported by Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana — who cruised to 37 off 24 with the help of five boundaries — as the pair stitched up 75 runs together.

The duo’s effort took Pakistan to needing 30 runs in the final over, but they only managed 19 more.

Marizanne Kapp was instrumental in South Africa’s victory, picking up two crucial wickets for 22 runs. Her performance, along with tight bowling from the rest of the South African bowlers, ensured that Pakistan fell short of the target.

Earlier, after being put into bat, South Africa were anchored by opener Tazmin Brits, who scored a steady 56 not out off 63 balls.

Her innings was punctuated by five boundaries, providing a solid foundation for the South African total of 132-4.

Sadia Iqbal took 3-34 for Pakistan.

Scores in brief:

SOUTH AFRICA 132-4 in 20 overs (Tazmin Brits 56 not out, Sune Luus 27; Sadia Iqbal 3-34); PAKISTAN 122-5 in 20 overs (Aliya Riaz 52 not out, Fatima Sana 37 not out; Marizanne Kapp 2-22).
