KARACHI: The Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) has called a meeting of like-minded parties’ heads in Karachi on Tuesday (Sept 10) to formulate a joint strategy and launch a collective struggle against proposed amendments to the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) Act.

The meeting would discuss a joint struggle against this conspiracy being hatched at the Presidency to rob Sindh of its constitutional rights and bypassing the Council of Common Interest (CCI) and other due constitutional process, a statement issued by GDA

Information Secretary Sardar Abdul Rahim said.

“The high-level consultative session of all Sindh-friendly political parties will be held at Functional League House, Karachi,” it said, adding that the session was aimed at discussing the amendments being made under the supervision of President Asif Ali Zardari with intention to steal water from the Indus River.

Those invited to the meeting included GDA Secretary General Dr Safdar Abbasi, Sindh United Party President Syed Zain Shah, Qaumi Awami Tehreek leader Ayaz Latif Palijo, Chairman of the Sindh Taraqqi-pasand Party Dr Qadir Magsi, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl leader Rashid Mehmood Soomro, Jamaat-i-Islami leader Mohammad Hussain Mahenti, Jeay Sindh Mahaz-R leader Riaz Chandio, and leaders of other Sindh-friendly political parties.

The meeting will have a detailed discussion on the efforts by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to deprive Sindh of its water rights, the statement said.

The Sept 10 meeting will be critical in thwarting the conspiracy, it added.
