HYDERABAD, March 31: Leaders of non-governmental organizations on Friday launched a campaign against karo-kari. The campaign “We can end honour killing” will continue during April in eight districts of Sindh.

Speaking at a news conference at the press club, Dr Arif Mehmood, campaign manager of Oxfam, Ambreen Nawaz, Ghaffar Malik of the Sindh Development Society, Rehana Channar of the Indus Valley Theatre and Sikandar Brohi of the Participatory Development Initiatives said that women had to face domestic violence as well as mental, sociological and sexual violence at every step.

They said that the most despicable and disgusting form of violence was the murder of women on the pretext of karo-kari in Sindh and Siyah-kari in Balochistan. Leaders of the alliance said that according to official figures, about 1,000 women were crucified at the altar of honour killing in Pakistan every year.

They said the campaign would continue in 25 districts of the country where more cases of honour killing had been reported.
